We often hear a lot of people say that they sweat excessively – but of course we all sweat more! This happens especially when we are hot or anxious though excessive sweating may be partly caused by genes. Sweating is necessary to us though because it is one of the ways we can regulate our body temperature and we rely on the evaporation to protect us against a hot environment. Unlike most other animals which rely on insulation or panting, we sweat, also to keep our skin moist. In fact, sweat even from some areas of the body contains scents or ‘pheromones’ that send secret signals to other people and according to New Scientist magazine (10 November 2001), it also contains a natural antibiotic, dermicidin, to destroy bacteria on the skin.

So if you think you sweat excessively, don’t be bothered too much by it. Healthy people really sweat especially when you are in a strenuous exercise, hot weather or you are simply having nervousness, anxiety or stress. Each person has about 3-4 million sweat glands so you have a lot in there. Even at rest in a cool environment, a normal person still loses about half a liter of sweat in a day because the sweat glands are capable of producing 12 liters of sweat in 24 hours. However, men sweat more than women because of body size (New Scientist 1 June 2002).

But if you are really alarmed of your sweating, we can also validate this because other people may have sweating as a symptom of known medical conditions. These include an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), gout, rheumatoid arthritis, tuberculosis, lymphoma, hypoglycemia, parasites, metabolic dysfunction, a nerve damage due to diabetes (autonomic dysfunction) or spinal cord injuries, liver disease or vitiligo. It can also be the result of some psychiatric disorders such as stress, panic attacks or anxiety disorders or perhaps from hot flashes associated with menopause.

To reduce your sweating and body odor bathe daily to keep the number of bacteria on your skin in check. Afterwards, dry yourself thoroughly because microorganisms thrive in the damp spaces. With foot odor you should choose shoes and socks that are made of natural materials to help prevent sweaty feet by allowing your feet to breathe. Also rotate your shoes and try not to wear the same pair two days in a row. And during the day, air your feet. In fact, go barefoot when you can, or at least slip out of your shoes now and then.

As for your clothes, choose natural-fiber clothing such as cotton, wool and silk for your skin to breathe. However, when you exercise, you can try high-tech fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin. Also try relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation or biofeedback to help you learn to control stress that triggers perspiration. Further more, change your diet because some foods or beverages cause you to sweat more than usual like caffeinated drinks as well as foods with strong odors.

Complications associated with too much or too little sweating can be annoying or life-threatening. Common complications of excessive sweating include fungal nail infections where your nail may separate from the nail bed, and the skin around it may become red and swollen along with a slight odor. Athlete’s foot is that unmistakable foot smell, which occurs when sweat and bacteria mix. A Jock itch is a fungal infection which causes an itching or burning sensation around your groin and is mildly contagious and can spread by contact or shared towels. Some bacterial infections and warts result form excessive sweating, especially around hair follicles or between your toes. Heat rash or prickly heat occurs when the pores around the sweat glands become blocked and sweat becomes trapped under your skin, causing fine red spots or bumps.

On the other hand, when you don’t perspire enough to cool your body, the results can be serious too as this would include heat exhaustion which can occur suddenly. This is often caused by excessive exercise and inadequate fluid intake where signs and symptoms include faintness, nausea, a rapid heartbeat, ashen appearance and dry skin. You can also have a Heatstroke which can occur when you work or exercise strenuously in hot weather and don’t drink enough. Its main signs and symptoms are a high temperature, hot and dry skin, and confusion or even coma. You can make an affordable home remedy if you have sweaty hands or feet. You can boil five tea bags in a quart of water for five to ten minutes. When the solution cools already, you can then soak your hands or feet for twenty to thirty minutes nightly. Make this a part of your ritual for tea contains tannic acid, which is also found in commercial products like Zilactol, and Zilactin. The astringent properties of the tannic acid are can be responsible for its antiperspirant action against your sweaty glands.

A year-round sun protection is important because the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) is very cunning. Its radiation can penetrate many of your clothes as well as go through automobile and residential windows. Worse, when you’re on snow or ice, your face and eyes are at almost twice the risk of UV damage because of the reflected glare.

The fact is, the UV rays can damage your eyes, contributing to cataracts, macular degeneration, and eyelid cancers. Research shows a link between sunburns and an increased risk of melanoma and skin cancer. That is why protecting skin from the sun during childhood and adolescence is important in reducing cancer risk. You should be especially vigilant because Ultraviolet (UV) rays can reflect off water, sand, and snow as well as reach below water’s surface.

Unprotected sun exposure is even more dangerous for those with moles on their skin or those whose parents have a tendency to develop moles. The sun is especially tough on very fair skin and hair and those who have a family history of skin cancer, including melanoma.

To give you an idea of just where the ultraviolet rays hit the hardest, consider the following. Out in the park, under a tree, the grass reflects 3% of the UV rays. When you’re under an umbrella on the beach, the fine sand reflects up to 20% of the UV rays and in the water, 75% of it can penetrate as deep as 10 meters. Even on a cloudy day you’re not safe for calm water reflects 35% of the UV rays. And when you’re out on working days, at lunchtime, in the city, sun bounces of the concrete and reflect 45% of the UV rays.

Its hard enough that UV rays are almost all around us, worse, 90% off all skin cancer can actually be attributed to the sun. By the age of 18, most people already received 50-80% of their lifetime exposure. That is why most skin cancer appears in adulthood though most of the damage occurs in childhood. In fact, just one bad blistering sunburn during childhood can double your risk of skin cancer later in life. If you think that UV rays that bounces off sand, snow, concrete and water can be dismissed, still, the reflecting rays can cause skin damage. Don’t even hide behind your frock because a white cotton t-shirt blocks out only about 5%, even less when wet.

That is why there is a big need for sun safety by protecting yourself and your family all year round. Seek the shade, especially between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M and avoid tanning and UV tanning booths. Also learn to put on a hat that shades the face, neck, and ears and plan outdoor activities to avoid the midday sun.

Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day and remember to apply 2 tablespoons of sunscreen to all exposed areas 30 minutes before exposure. There’s also a need to reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating and keep an extra bottle of sunscreen in the car. Keep your newborns out of the sun and Sunscreens should already be used on babies by the age of six months and up. Only choose a sunscreen that has protection against both UVA and UVB rays. This is referred to as “broad-spectrum” sunscreen. To avoid skin allergy avoid sunscreens with PABA and look for a product with the active ingredient titanium dioxide which is a chemical-free block. Don’t forget your lips, hands, ears, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck and bathing suit straps when applying sunscreen. Don’t ever try to scrimp and stretch out a bottle of sunscreen, apply the sunscreen generously and reapply sunscreen often.

If you do get sunburn, to be comfortable, keep in the shade until the sunburn is healed for any additional sun exposure will only increase the severity of the burn and pain. Be sure to take a cool, not cold, bath later to help alleviate pain and heat. Try pure aloe vera gel that available in most pharmacies or taken directly from within the leaves of the plant for it’s excellent for relieving sunburn pain and helping skin heal quicker. Or you can take a pain reliever like acetaminophen or ibuprofen and spray on “after-sun” pain relievers. Never use petroleum-based products in sunburn because they prevent excess heat and sweat from escaping. Another one to avoid also is first-aid products that contain benzocaine which may only cause skin irritation or allergy.

If you’re planning to get a spa treatment, please refrain from eating within one hour prior to receiving massage or any body treatment. Alcoholic beverages should also be avoided before any spa treatment and do not shave your legs as well within 24 hours of receiving a body treatment. These are all to prep you up to a luxurious treatment.

Among all the treatments in a spa, the massage tops the list. They are core to the basic services offered to you by a spa. You might want to try different types of massage such as a Thai massage, hot stone massage or a reflexology. Second to the massage are facial services or body treatments which will be appropriated for your skin type.

A facial will deeply cleanse and maintain your skin by exfoliating dead skin cells and to maintain a smooth, clear, well-hydrated skin. The Basic Steps of a Facial involves cleansing, skin analysis, exfoliation, massage, extraction of impurities, and application of products targeted to your skin type whether dry, oily, mixed, sensitive or mature. The ideal is that you should get a facial once a month or once every six weeks. This is how long it takes the skin to regenerate. However, you should try to have a facial at least four times a year to fit with the seasonal changes. Variations of the facial include the “mini-facial” which is just cleansing without extractions and specialty facials. Vitamin C is for “age defense” facial while an “oxygen facial” happens when a mist of pure oxygen is part of the treatment. There’s also the popular “collagen facial” where special collagen sheets are placed on the skin.

In a normal body scrub on the other hand, the body scrub is often combined with a detoxifying or hydrating body wrap with products like mud, algae, or seaweed. These are used to detoxify your skin because they stimulate your blood circulation as well as lymphatic system and help your body’s own ability to carry away waste products. Treatments also use rich cream or oil which softens and condition the skin.

One of the most popular body treatment is waxing, which is a temporary method of hair removal and removes hair from the root. Through this, new hairs will not grow back in the previously waxed area for three to eight weeks while almost any area of the body can be waxed. Most of these areas include eyebrows, face, bikini area, legs, back, arms, abdomen and feet. It is accomplished by spreading a wax combination thinly over the skin and where a cloth or paper strip is then pressed on the top and ripped off. This has to be done with a quick movement against the direction of hair growth. The removal of the wax takes along with it the hair and dead skin cells, leaving the skin smooth. New hair growth in waxed areas is soft and fine, unlike shaved hair so that repeated waxing will cause hair regrowth that is less common.

There are various types of waxing where some must be performed by a licensed cosmetologist or esthetician. Waxing can be performed by eyebrow waxing, face waxing, bikini, male genital, & brazilian waxing, leg waxing, arm/underarm waxing, back waxing and foot waxing. There are areas which should never be waxed and these include inside the ears and nose as well as eyelashes. Areas of the body that should only be waxed by a licensed professional include the female genitals, male genitals as well as the nipples.
Before receiving all these treatments from the spa, remember that in order to enjoy your trip you must arrive at least 30 minutes before your treatment is scheduled to begin. This way you can check in, change into your robe and use the spa facilities like a sauna, steam bath, or hot tub. To get the most out of your spa experience, do take a deep breath, exhale and leave your concerns and worries outside. Focus your mind always on the present because being in the moment will help you reap all healing benefits from your facial or body treatment. You should also to communicate with your treatment specialist especially if you have any health concerns or if you feel any discomfort. Most importantly, if you want to get long lasting health benefits from spa treatment then make them a regular part of your life and they will nurture and care for you.

Studies show that 50 to 55% of American women and 40 to 45% of American men suffer from some vein problem. More specifically, varicose veins affect 1 out of 2 people age 50 and older. This disorder is the result of insufficiency of the valves in the communicating veins, those that link the superficial and deep veins of the lower limb. Normally, blood flows from the superficial to the deep veins, however, when the valve becomes defective, blood is forced into the superficial veins by the action of the muscle pump. As we all know, the heart pumps blood filled with oxygen and nutrients to the whole body and the arteries carry the blood towards the body parts. It is the veins that carry oxygen-poor blood from the body back to the heart. These veins have valves that act as one-way flaps which prevent the blood from flowing backwards as it moves up the legs. However, when the one-way valves become weak, blood can leak back into the vein and collect there, leading to venous insufficiency. The pooled blood enlarges the vein which becomes varicose or spider veins.

Varicose veins and spider veins appear in particularly in the legs because of the following:

* the force of gravity
* the pressure of body weight
* the task of carrying blood from the bottom of the body up to the heart

All of these factors make legs the primary location for varicose and spider veins, as compared with other veins in the body. It can be said that leg veins have the toughest job of carrying blood back to the heart because they endure the most pressure, especially in the veins’ one-way valves.

There are also many factors which increase a person’s chances of developing varicose or spider veins. These include increasing age and having family members with vein problems or being born with weak vein valves. Along with the list also include hormonal changes which occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Also, taking birth control pills and other medicines containing estrogen and progesterone increase the risk. When you’re also in pregnancy there is a huge increase in the amount of blood in the body so that this can cause veins to enlarge. Add up to that, the expanding uterus also puts pressure on the veins. However, varicose veins usually improve within 3 months after delivery though a growing number of abnormal veins usually appear with each additional pregnancy. Like pregnancy, obesity, leg injury, prolonged standing and other things can also weaken vein valves. Lastly, sun exposure can cause spider veins on the cheeks or nose of a fair-skinned person to appear.

Varicose or spider veins are not only unsightly, they are also inconvenient because you will feel aching, heavy legs with especially worse at night. You’ll also feel ankle swelling and a brownish-blue shiny skin discoloration around the veins with skin over the vein becoming dry, itchy and thin, leading to eczema (venous eczema). Also, the skin may darken, a thing called stasis dermatitis, because of the waste products building up in the legs. There is also the danger of minor injuries to the area because it may bleed more than normal and/or take a long time to heal although there is rarely a large amount of bleeding from a ruptured vein. Unfortunately, in some people the skin above the ankle may shrink, this is called lipodermatosclerosis, because the fat underneath the skin becomes hard.
You’ll have a problem once you got varicose veins because they usually enlarge and worsen over time causing health problems including severe venous insufficiency. This severe pooling of blood in the veins slows down the return of blood to the heart and this condition can cause blood clots and severe infections. Blood clots are dangerous because they can move from leg veins and travel to the lungs where it becomes life-threatening. Sores or skin ulcers can also occur on skin tissue around varicose veins along with ongoing irritation, swelling and painful rashes of the legs. To avoid this, though not all varicose and spider veins can be prevented, some things can reduce your chances of getting new varicose and spider veins. These can help ease discomfort from the ones you already have so for one, you can start wear Sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun. Also, exercise regularly to improve your circulation and vein strength especially exercises that work your legs. You should also control your weight to avoid placing too much pressure on your legs. To ease up your legs do not cross your legs when sitting and elevate your legs when resting. Also, do not stand or sit for long periods of time, if you must then shift your weight from one leg to the other or move around or take a short walk every 30 minutes. Start inside by eating a low-salt diet rich in high-fiber foods because they reduce the chances of constipation. Examples of this are fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Treatment options for worsened veins include surgery, sclerotherapy, EVLT (endovenous laser treatment), ambulatory phlebectomy, radiofrequency occlusion, vein ligation and vein stripping.

Sometimes, we take our tips for granted but have we really asked what is the purpose of the nail and why is its health important? Perhaps we can be convinced by knowing the Nail Anatomy, which is an important structure, made of keratin that has 2 purposes. Through this, the fingernail acts as a protective plate as well as enhances sensation of the fingertip. The sensation function of the nail is fond in how the fingertip has many nerve endings to receive volumes of information about objects we touch. It is the nail that acts as a counterforce to the fingertip providing even more sensory input when touching. Apart form helping protect the finger or toe from injury, nails can also contribute to the ability to pick up and grasp small objects.
But more importantly among these many functions, our nails can help us in monitoring our health because a poor nail health is a sign of other health ailments. These include diseases or nutrition deficiencies that are shown in white nails which signify liver disease, a partially-white nails which indicate kidney disease and curved white lines which appear from exposure to certain toxic chemicals like arsenic. However, isolated white spots or lines on the nail are areas of the nail where trauma used to occur back at the base and are harmless. Nails having pits are due to injury or psoriasis while yellowing, thickening, and slowed growth of the nail is characteristic of insufficient oxygen that can be caused by lung disease such as bronchitis or swollenness. However, yellow nails with pink at the base are typical of diabetes while a dark band could be a sign of diabetes, congestive heart failure or cancer, or just aging. Be wary when the base of the nail separates from the cuticle because this may be in response to Psoriasis, Medication, a Nail Product or to a Fungal Infection. Furthermore, redness under the nail is associated with heart conditions. While a bluish hue underneath the nail signifies poor circulation. Paleness under the nail signifies anemia while clubbed nails or large depressions in the nails could be from low blood oxygen levels that occur on account of anemia or respiratory disease. Major stressors like a heart attack or sickness accompanied by high fever can cause your nails to temporarily stop growing and this interruption leaves grooves.

Your nails can also experience Splinter Hemorrhages when there is disruption of blood vessels in the nail bed which cause fine, splinter-like vertical lines to appear under the plate. These are caused by injury to the nail or by certain drugs and diseases and they can be resolve spontaneously. Ingrown Nails are a common nail problem with the great toenails particularly vulnerable. Improper nail trimming, tight shoes, or poor posture can cause this which are painful and might lead to infection. Seek treatment rather than attempting to cut away the nail as infection may result. There’s also Onychomycosis which are fungal infections of the nail which cause discoloration and abnormal growth. Fungal infections make up approximately 50 percent of all nail disorders and are difficult to treat leading to the end of the nail to separate from the nail bed. From it, white, green, yellow, or black debris may build up under the nail plate. Toenails are more susceptible though because they are confined in a warm, moist and weight-bearing environment. When there is redness, swelling, and pain of the nail skin folds, this can be a bacterial infection where the most common cause is trauma to the nail or frequent exposure to water and chemicals. Tumors and warts can also be found near the nail unit and the nail plate can be destroyed as a result of the tumor or wart growth. Warts are viral infections that are painful and can sometimes cause limited use of the affected finger or toe. Treatment usually involves freezing or chemical application for removal or dermatologic surgery may be necessary. Psoriasis can also affect the nails and is a chronic skin disease characterized by red, scaly patches.

To avoid hurting your nails keep them clean and dry to keep bacteria and other infectious organisms from collecting under. If toenails are thick and difficult to cut, soak them in warm salt water for five to ten minutes. Nails should be cut straight across and rounded slightly at the tip for strength, filing the nails into points will weaken them. Also, do not remove your cuticle for it will allow infection to develop. Avoid “digging-out” ingrown toenails on your own if they are already infected and sore. Remember that any injury to the cuticle can affect the nail and it takes about six months for a nail to grow from cuticle to tip with thumb and pinky nails growth more slow than those on the middle and index finger. Fast-growing nails are an indication that you are well-nourished though no single food promotes nail growth. Dryness is enemies of fingernails so avoid hot water and soap which can dry them along with gardening or household chores. Keeping them wet also for a long period makes them brittle when dry so gloves a moisturizer is a good idea. Most importantly, be wary of cuticle removers for they contain harsh chemicals that can make your nails drier, also nail polish and polish remover. Actually, the fewer compounds you apply to your nails, the better.

However, our hair tops the list of those body parts that do not count. Apparently, hair provides no vital function for humans though its psychological effect is nearly immeasurable. Like for instance, a luxurious scalp hair expresses femininity for women as well as masculinity for men. The lack of scalp hair or the presence of excessive facial or body hair is distressing for females. This can be expressly seen in the gross sales of cosmetics catering to hair removals ad the likes. This also goes as well for the loss of beard and body hair to males. In fact, although male baldness is accepted in our society, it is still distressing to most men and we can see them often going to great lengths to preserve, restore, or regrow their precious scalp.

However, between both sexes, women more than men are bombarded with more advertising images of models with luxuriously dense hair. These images only establish a standard which women are often forced to emulate and these unrealistic images are often the background when a woman discusses expectations for hair transplantation or hair restoration. These unrealistic images are more and perpetuated even more by hair-product advertising.

As for the man, he may already naturally expect to lose hair as he gets older, especially when his father, uncles, or other near relatives had male-pattern baldness. A woman, on the other hand, does not generally expect to lose hair even if there is a history of hair loss in her male or female relatives. In fact, in the United States, at least, thinning hair and baldness is a often dismissed as a “male thing.” Apparently, hair loss has become a gender issue. Our society has slowly adapted to this such that men can often cope with hair loss better than women. To compensate, women are more likely than men to try to hide hair loss, pore over their hair loss with a hair styles, try to develop a hair style that disguises hair loss or simply spend more time on other aspects of physical appearance to divert their attention from hair loss. Furthermore, a woman usually feels that she must have a full head of hair to meet societal expectations and that thinning hair is acceptable only when a woman is very old.

Sadly, societal expectation is in conflict with the unfortunate reality of hair loss for women. The fact is that many women experience hair loss at young to middle age and the incidence of female hair loss seems to be increasing every year. The common causes for female hair loss include Androgenetic alopecia, which is a hereditary pattern hair loss with a typical pattern of diffuse hair thinning at the central scalp. There is also the Alopecia areata which is a recurrent disease of unknown cause and results in patchy loss of hair from the scalp and even the eyebrows. The Telogen effluvium is also a condition that causes shedding of hair of the entire scalp following a stressful event such as high fever, severe dietary deficiency, and chronic blood loss from a heavy menstruation. On the other hand, Hypothyroidism is a thyroid deficiency which can be associated with thinning, patchy loss of hair. The Loose anagen syndrome is a condition that causes hair to shed before its normal growth cycle. Traction alopecia happens with tight braiding and corn-rowing can cause permanent damage to hair and scalp. Apparently, even pregnancy carries with it hormonal changes and stress of pregnancy which leads to temporary hair loss. Some chemical chemicals used in hair styling can, over time, cause also permanent damage to hair and scalp. Trichotillomania also or compulsive hair plucking is when a person feels compelled to pluck hair in regular or bizarre patterns resulting in traction alopecia hair loss. Some potential causes of hair loss in women require serious medical treatment. These include cystic ovaries, autoimmune disease, chemotherapy, hypothyroidism, psychological or physical stress, and dietary deficiencies. Be wary also of prescription drugs which commonly cause hair loss including beta-blockers, coumadin, anti-depressants and others. Damage to hair that are caused by tight braiding, corn-rowing, or chemicals used in hair styling are causes of hair loss that require change in life-style while compulsive hair require psychological counseling.

Psychological-wise, if hair loss causes a lot of psychological or emotional problems for woman then she should be taken seriously by family, friends, and the personal physician. Many women today experience hair loss and choose to do something about it by seeking hair restoration through various treatments or procedures.
Those who chose to treat this naturally opt for an Indian Head Massage which used to be a part of a regular grooming routine of Indian women using vegetable oils such as coconut, almond, olive and sesame. This was done to nourish the hair and promote circulation. Although there are many different personal techniques for the Indian Head Massage, a certain osteopath and massage therapist, Narendra Mehta, has formalized the therapy called Champissage. Champi is the Indian word for “head massage” and is, in fact, the origin of the English word shampoo. Mr. Mehta’s Champissage is a powerful therapy that promotes physical, mental and spiritual health because it works on the body’s three higher charkas. These are those that are located on the crown of the head, the forehead and the throat. Chakras are energy centers that are believed to regulate the flow of energy and working on the top three chakras can bring the entire body into balance. In addition to healthy hair growth, Champissage also has other benefits like decreased stress, more restful sleep, more energy and mental clarity. The massage is most effective when you receive it from someone else though self-massage can also be very beneficial. A self-massage technique would generally include gently massaging the whole scalp in a circular motion with thumbs and fingers as well as gently grasping your hair at the roots and tugging upward You can also incorporate squeezing the temples with your palms and making large circular movements and squeezing up and down the back of the neck. You can also include squeezing the shoulder muscles from the base of the neck to outward. The scalp part of the massage is stimulating and will really get your blood pumping. The hair oil that is used during massage would lubricate the hair follicles and keep them from knotting.
